Finding Assurance in 1 John
Many Christians find the letter of 1 John challenging. John uses strong language about sin, truth, obedience, and the marks of genuine faith.
At times, his words can feel confronting - which is a good thing for us! But he tells us plainly what his primary purpose is:
"I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life."
– 1 John 5:13
In fact, his letter contains some of the most comforting promises in all of Scripture:
God faithfully forgives those who confess their sins (1 Jn. 1:9).
Jesus is our Advocate before the Father (1 Jn. 2:1–2).
We are the loved children of God (1 Jn. 3:1).
God is greater than our condemning hearts (1 Jn. 3:20).
The One who is in us is greater than the one who is in the world (1 Jn. 4:4).
God showed His love by sending His Son for us (1 Jn. 4:10).
We can know that we have eternal life (1 Jn. 5:13).
As you read 1 John, pay close attention to these promises. Take them to heart. Memorise them.
Let them remind you that your confidence rests not in your own performance, but in God's grace through Jesus Christ.
