Reframing Work

On Sunday, the sermon on Ephesians 6:5-9 reminded us about the importance of reframing how we work. We can see how Paul calls the Ephesians to reframe their work in three key areas:

  1. Reframing their Why - Looking at how our motives behind our work influence the way we work. How if honouring God and serving Jesus is not our primary motive, then other idols of the heart will creep in.

  2. Reframing their What – Looking at how we often allow a cultural mindset that says there is ‘sacred’ and ‘secular’ work. However, in reality God sees all work as a gift that can be used for His kingdom.

  3. Reframing their How – Looking at the way in which we work. Understanding that our attitudes towards our work and the people we work with can speak volumes about our faith in Jesus, for good or bad!

We all know work can be tough, especially if you work in a difficult environment with difficult people. We also must grapple with the fact that we are all fighting our sinful nature, which constantly clamours for its own praise, comfort and reward. This is why we cannot hope to win what is ultimately a spiritual battle for our work by our own strength.

But we can take heart! God has, in His kindness, given us His Spirit as our helper, comforter and guide. It is by the Spirit that we have been sealed and given ..’ the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it..’ (Ephesians 1: 11-14). Knowing that our great hope lies in the eternity to come, we can trust God with our work now, no matter what we do, who we work for, what status we possess or what kind of season we are in. When we are motivated by our identity in Christ, we will be energised and compelled to work in such a way that Honours God and points others to Jesus.

I’m praying this would be an encouragement to you all as you go about your work this week.
